What are the common obstacles.....

A common obstacle is uniting staff in a shared commitment to the development of an information literate school community. It is an obstacle because information literacy is a whole school responsibility and is not restricted to within the library walls or the library program. Skills are developed in the library, classroom and at home. Teachers themselves must be informed and act as role models for information literate students (Henri, 2005). However, in many school libraries it is assumed that this role is solely a library responsibility. This can be thought of as being caused by an already crowded curriculum, pedagogical practice, confusion about the meaning of information literacy, a lack of skills and knowledge about information literacy, and a misunderstanding of the role of the teacher librarian and school library. Overcoming these obstacles requires strong channels of communication, a clarification on the role of teacher librarians, information about information literacy, and if required, professional development. All require a qualified teacher librarian and as Haycock (1999) clearly documents, support from the Principal
